The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office collected 103 firearms at its latest gun exchange event over the weekend.
In return for handing over a gun, county residents received a $50 gift card from Bealls department stores, Sports Authority, Sweetbay supermarkets and more.
“Gun crimes are not particularly prevalent in our community,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “But firearms can pose safety risks for owners who may no longer be comfortable with the weapons or when young gamily members are in the home.”
People turned in 140 guns at a similar event in December.
