Homelessness topic on joint commission agenda
Date: February 4, 2013
by: Alex Mahadevan | News Editor
Sarasota County and city of Sarasota commissioners will meet Feb. 5, for the first time this year to discuss topics ranging from homelessness issues to the future of public transit.
The conversation will begin with the city initiative to hire two caseworkers work with the Sarasota Police Department, and continue with short-term and long-term strategies both municipalities can employ to reduce homelessness.
County and city commissioners will also discuss the future of the Community Redevelopment Agency, which is set to expire in 2016. The county has contributed $53 million to the CRA through the current fiscal year, and will spend an additional $11 million through 2016.
County staff will show a presentation about bus rapid transit, a progressive public transportation system that will require the city’s participation if both decide to use Tamiami Trail as the primary route.

- The guys who work the system, coming down to Florida, begging in the streets with signs saying "stranded, starving, etc" should be entered into a program to rehabilitate their drug and drinking problems. A nice farm would be the first place to go for them to pick crops and earn a decent living. All persons holding signs should have to stand a certain distance from traffic, for safety reasons too.
