Children explored Mote Marine Aquarium Saturday, June 8, during World Ocean Day. Mote partnered with nonprofits that focus on marine issues to educate children about marine life. About 800 children visited the aquarium where they learned from 13 vendors.

Senator Nancy Detert joined Representatives Greg Steube and Jim Boyd for an annual legislative update Thursday, June 6, at the monthly Tiger Bay Club meeting. Senator Lisa Carlton monitored the discussion, in which the three politicians provided an update about the last year of legislation. Carlton and Tiger Bay members submitted questions, which covered topics like healthcare reform, state budget, domestic partnerships, homelessness and environmental issues.

The board of directors of the Women’s Exchange awarded $257,000 in grants and Scholarships Thursday, June 6 to 19 of Sarasota and Manatee counties local arts and cultural organization and to 32 students. The board of directors chose recipients in April based on a few key guidelines. Students had to be pursuing higher education in the arts and the local community organization had to be involved in the arts as well.
