School Board Chairwoman Caroline Zucker was a guest lunch server Oct. 17 to Booker Middle School students. President Kennedy proclaimed National School Lunch Week in 1963. The Sarasota County School District celebrated this week with guest servers in county schools.
"Fifty percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Sometimes the only food that they get is the breakfast and lunch that we serve them here at school and that needs to be recognized," Zucker said.
President Harry S. Truman started The National School Lunch Program in 1946. Schools throughout the United States still have the program to this day.
"We tend to think of Sarasota as a community that is very wealthy, we don’t think of the other Sarasota where the kids go to bed hungry and this gives them food in their stomachs so they can learn," Zucker said.
