Seeing it as a critical need for downtown Sarasota, the advisory board to the Community Redevelopment Agency recommended the CRA immediately fund all three phases of the city’s wayfinding system.

Wayfinding is a series of directional signs that point drivers and pedestrians to things such as public-parking lots and the historic district.

The system will cost $1.4 million. The CRA has $832,750 to put toward that cost. The city is still looking for grants and other sources to fund the remaining $583,050.

Phase one includes parking and pedestrian signs.

Phase two includes directional signs for cars and historic district signs.

Phase three includes gateways that welcome drivers to downtown.

“It’s critical to the success of downtown,” said Ron McCullough, advisory board chairman.
