Sarasota Police Department officials offered several solutions to the transient crime problem in Sarasota at the inaugural general-membership meeting of the Downtown Sarasota Alliance.
Lt. Jeff Karr identified five areas where the transient problem is concentrated — Bayfront Park, Five Points Park, Selby Library, Starbucks on First Street and Whole Foods Market.
He said 24 arrests have been made and 136 trespassing warnings have been issued at those locations so far this year.
Karr’s suggestions to lowering those numbers included: removing some park benches in those areas; installing a wrought-iron fence around Five Points Park to prevent sitting on the concrete wall; and, most importantly, getting the involvement of downtown business owners and residents to help identify the people causing the problems.
“Chronic complainers won’t solve anything,” he said.
Mary Anne Servian, DSA board member, urged members to write to city commissioners and ask for an earlier closing time for Five Points Park and that all homeless feedings in the park be stopped.
“One of the things we need to come out of here is there are things we can do,” she said. “We cannot just say it’s City Hall’s problem. It’s our problem, and we have to take our city back.”

Can you dig it?
Third- and fourth-grade students of Temple Beth Sholom had a chance to brush up on their paleontology skills last week while digging for faux dinosaur bones.
Sound of scholars
Local students Caleb Upton and Matthew Vaadi received some help for their upcoming studies to the tune of $1,000 each from the Sarasota Chorus of the Keys. The scholarships were made possible through the Sheridan E. Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund. Both students plan to use the funds toward a career in music.
