Sarasota Police Chief Peter Abbott will ask the City Commission at tonight’s commission meeting to approve an ordinance that would make running red lights a civil violation and allow police to enforce that law with traffic cameras.

Although running a red light is already illegal, the only way a violator can currently be ticketed is if an officer witnesses an infraction. A bill in the Legislature that would have legalized red-light cameras statewide died in May.
