Two DUI checkpoints near Siesta Key resulted in 104 citations and 10 DUI arrests during Memorial Day weekend.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office reports that one of those arrests gave one driver his fourth DUI charge.
One checkpoint was set up Friday night at Bay Island Park on Siesta Drive. The other was Saturday morning at Stickney Point Road and Avenue A.
Deputies also made nine arrests on other charges, including possession of alcohol by a minor, drug possession and driving with a suspended license.
“To remove 10 impaired drivers from Sarasota County roads over the holiday weekend made all citizens safer,” said Sheriff Tom Knight.

- So, the police were stopping vehicles with no probable cause. Sounds like a police state to me, a transgression of individual rights. Perhaps the citizens should randomly stop and search police vehicles for contraband and drinking while on duty.
Maybe the police should then extend their searches for political affiliation , abortion pros and cons, eating meat on Fridays, and what not. But never fear that the police will ever have a checkpoint in search of illegal aliens. Now that would make some sense, a sense the police are seriously lacking.
