The Sarasota City Commission has a new head, as Vice Mayor Willie Shaw became the new mayor at a meeting this afternoon.
Shaw, who represents District One on the City Commission, was selected by his peers to fill the ceremonial position and lead meetings for the next year. Elected in 2011, Shaw previously served as the city’s vice mayor during the past two years.
Susan Chapman, an at-large representative who was elected to the commission in 2013, will fill the post of vice mayor.
Shaw will replace Shannon Snyder, who recently announced his candidacy for a County Commission race and his intentions to resign his post this November.
