The NewGate School third-grader Koy Jacobsen’s work was selected as part of the SRQ Student Artwork Contest to be displayed at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Koy’s work went on display April 4 along with 100 other student artwork pieces. Student artwork will remain on display for one year.
+ Marine maven
Sarasota Bay Watch presented its first Coastal Excellence Award to Riverview High School teacher Katrin Rudge March 28, for her devotion and contribution to marine and environmental issues. Rudge has created in-classroom aquaria systems for students and provided educational outreach through the “Stars to Starfish” program she developed.
+ Insightful internship
The Law Firm of Norton, Hammersley, Lopez and Skokos, P.A. is offering the Norton Hammersley Internship Program for Riverview High School students who are interested in pursuing a legal career. The program allows up to three junior or senior students per year to meet with attorneys and learn about practicing law. To participate, students must be available two to three hours a day, three days a week, for about three weeks. For info, call 328-8396.
+ Electricians at work
Brookside Middle School eighth- grade science teacher Susan Roberts received the Edge of Excellence Classroom Grant from the Education Foundation of Sarasota County. Brookside students will build tin-can robots Tuesday, April 23, as part of the grant, which came from a John Swift Co. endowment to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Students will use the knowledge of electricity they have learned in the classroom to make the robots operate.
