Meters to be installed by end of the month

Preliminary work began this week on the spots where downtown parking meters will be placed.

Installation of the actual meters will begin as soon as the prep work is complete, which could be the end of April.

Crews are digging holes and placing pads in preparation of meter placement.

They will be installed downtown in an area bounded roughly by Gulfstream Avenue, Orange Avenue, First Street and McAnsh Square.

The cost will be $1 per hour everywhere but Gulfstream, where it will be 50 cents per hour.

A total of 459 parking spaces will be metered.

  • What a damn waste of taxpayers' money. Business will be driven to the malls where parking is free. Say goodbye to downtown businesses. Their protests went unheeded. Sarasota tried the meters a couple of decades ago and they failed businesses monumentally. Now the city wants to bring them back only to have the same result. Does each generation not know the failures of the prior? Are we doomed to repeat the same mistakes thinking that this time will be different? What a joke.
