Gretchen Porro and Summer Dawn Wallace did not know what Google Fiber was when we asked them.
Google plans to build and test ultra-speedy broadband networks in select trial locations across the country for its new Fiber Network, which will offer 1 Gigabit-per-second data transfer rates, making Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what Americans use today.
We checked with Sarasota residents to see if they're up to date on Google Fiber and whether they think Sarasota would make a good trial location.

What is Google Fiber?
“It’s a way to make Sarasota more of a technologically inspired Mecca. We have so much invested in the arts, music and media, it would be a great way to keep Sarasota connected.
Would you want Sarasota to be a test market for Google’s new Fiber Network?
“Of course. Nothing but positive things can come from that. We could continue to inspire young people to grow and market themselves, and to help Sarasota flourish.”

“It sounds like a diet. You need to get Google Fiber in your diet to be more regular.”

“Yes. I spend a lot of time at Google Island.”

“It’s what the South Florida population needs and also our new estate blend coffee at Pastry Art for the month of March.

“It would be great for the community. People can visit www.pastryart.com for a link to the HuB’s ‘Google Island’ and nominate Sarasota.”

Cardinal Mooney High School hosted its 11th annual walkathon to raise money for All Children’s Hospital Saturday Feb. 4. Students and families joined staff to walk for a cause. Eleven years ago, the high school lost several students to leukemia and decided to start this fundraising event to raise funds for research. The walkathon, which includes a dance-off, concession stands and field-day activities, was sponsored by Harmor Mobility, Sarasota Lanes, Petland and Tropicana. -
