Traffic is being rerouted this afternoon after a woman in a minivan hit two pedestrians trying to cross Fruitville Road at Lemon Avenue.
One victim was in critical condition and had to be flown to Bayfront Medical Center, although police say that person was conscious and breathing. The other victim was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
Eastbound Fruitville Road is closed between Central Avenue and Lemon Avenue. The road is expected to re-open around 4 p.m.
Officers say the minivan was turning left from Lemon Avenue to eastbound Fruitville Road when it hit the pedestrians, who are believed to have crossed the street on a “don’t walk” signal.
The impact shattered the minivan’s windshield. The driver was not hurt.
