‘Broke as a joke’
2:10 a.m. — 6500 block of Gateway Avenue. Petit theft. When a customer was unable to pay his $36 bar tab because his credit card was declined, the bartender called the sheriff’s office. The customer initially told deputies the machine just wasn’t reading his card because it was cracked. The bartender continued to try to run the card, and the customer told him, “You can run this card all night, but I am broke as a joke.” He didn’t know the deputy had overheard him, and he was arrested.
