The 9th Annual Downtown Sarasota Craft Festival brought hundreds of people out to peruse, buy and enjoy a variety of arts and crafts, Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, along Main Street and in 5 points park.

Rabbi Brenner Glickman reminded Temple Emanu-El members of the importance of animal companionship and the roles pets play in our lives Saturday, May 18. Rabbi Glickman delivered a scripture-inspired message about animals before personally blessing guests’ pets, and a veterinarian was on hand to provide routine check ups.

The U.S. Southeastern Regional Martial Arts team, which consists of members from all over the state, met Saturday, May 12, at Sarasota High School to train for the upcoming World Martial Arts Games. In preparation for the competition, students practiced circuit workouts, sparring and various katas, which consist of choreographed martial arts techniques. The team is currently arranging fundraisers to pay for the World Games in Geneva, Switzerland this August.

Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences held its first annual anime and gaming convention, called Toracon, Saturday, May 12. Students joined vendors and visitors from the community, as they dressed in costumes, played games, attended demonstrations and shared their interest in anime. Organizer Liz Smith said the idea for Toracon came from SSAS student’s desire to hold their own convention, much like the larger ones held across the state.

The third day of the Harvey Milk Festival kicked off with live music Saturday, May 12, in Five Points Park. Community members gathered to remember the life and political career of Harvey Milk and enjoy art, music, film and vendors.

The Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce presented its Taste of Latin America celebration Saturday, May 5, in downtown Sarasota. The festival brought live entertainment and Latin American food and culture, where people danced and celebrated Cinco de Mayo.

As part of its annual Earth Day celebration, Friday, April 27, Brookside Middle School hosted a variety of activities to promote eco-friendly practices. Students participated in one of the most anticipated events of the year, where among other activities, students constructed their own shower heads and attempted to take showers using only five gallons of water.
