On the recommendation of the Sarasota County Arts Council, county commissioners are expected to approve more than $1 million in grants to local arts and cultural organizations tomorrow.
The SCAC’s Cultural/Arts Grant Panel has recommended awarding $1,063,162 to 25 groups.
The half-cent tourist-development tax generates the money for the grants.
Groups to receive awards include:
Asolo Theatre: $87,180
Florida Studio Theatre: $87,634
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens: $84,456
Sarasota Ballet: $87,180
Sarasota Film Festival: $49,817
Sarasota Opera: $88,088
Sarasota Orchestra: $86,272
The Players Theatre: $48,961

- Just using Sarasota Opera's Don Giovanni as an example, there was not ONE WORD on the website anywhere about how much the tickets cost, nor if any senior or low-income discounts are available. This inevitably leads to the question "What IS the community getting for the money?"

- A similar grant to me would be a tremendous help in my appreciation of the arts. I would dance a jig in my new tutu and be gleeful!!!
