Cedars hits the courts for annual championship

The annual Cedars Tennis & Fitness Club championship concluded Feb. 26 with final matches and an awards luncheon.
The winners were: women’s 3.0 doubles, Judy Arndt and Jane Oaks; women’s 65-plus doubles, Jane Goodman and Jane Oaks; women’s 3.5 doubles, Joan Afterman and Lenore Rubin; women’s open doubles, Penny Klein and Doris Forst; mixed-open doubles, Mike Frain and Lori Martel; men’s open doubles, Don Arndt and Tom Kane; men’s 3.5 doubles and men’s 65-plus doubles, Ed Dwyer and Jim Shepherd; men’s 75 doubles, Joe Guiliani and Peter Jorgenson; men’s open singles, Yoram Ariely; and men’s 70 singles, Jim Shepherd. (Some of the matches will be scheduled at a later date due to rain.)
Event Chairwoman Doris Forst reported that 53 members participated.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
