Joan Lieberman plays golf three to four times a week at the Longboat Key Club and Resort for the 9-hole Ladies Golf Association. She’s been a Key Club member for 20 years and has been coming to Longboat Key for 25 years. She lives on Longboat Key for seven months of the year, but she also plays golf three to four times a week during the five months that she lives in Milwaukee. She also likes to take Zumba classes, which she says are a lot of fun.
Why did you start playing tennis?
I was a tennis player from high school on and played tennis for many years while I was married and had young children. When my children grew up and became independent, I needed a little challenge. That’s when I took up golf. I took a half-dozen lessons when I first started, but they were just to learn how to hold the club. I learned it all on the course.
What kind of clubs do you prefer?
I use all woods. When I hit an iron, I never know if it’s going off to the next tee or fairway. I find I hit straighter but not as far with my woods.
What’s your favorite part of golfing?
I like being out in the fresh air and playing with friends. I don’t take it seriously.
What’s the hardest part of golfing?
It’s the frustration. You know where you want to hit it, but it just doesn’t go there.
Where is the prettiest course on which you’ve played?
It was in California right on the water; it was just so beautiful. The scenery was gorgeous. I enjoy that part of golf.
What is the breakfast of champions?
Lots of decaf coffee, a bran muffin and some fruit. I’d put a lot of butter on the muffin.
