Deal Us In: Staying on the defense
September 8, 2010
South's leap to three notrump over his partner's opening bid showed 16 to 18 high-card points and 4-3-3-3 distribution. North, who really should have opened with a bid of one notrump, added the known points and bid what he thought he could make.
Deal Us In: Against all odds
August 18, 2010
The defenders begin with a club to East's ace. A diamond to West's ace follows, along with a diamond ruff by East and a club exit. West follows with the three of clubs. What should happen next?
Deal Us In: A Difficult Signal
August 11, 2010
West leads the deuce of spades, which dummy wins with the king. A trump is led from the dummy. How can East show a possibility of helping in the defense with his almost worthless hand?
Deal Us In: When to duck
August 4, 2010
West led the deuce of clubs against the three no-trump contract, East played the queen, and South won with his ace.
Deal Us In: How to make this slam
July 28, 2010
South's rebid of five hearts promised a six-card suit and a good hand. North bid five hearts to invite a slam. Because of good trump and honors in his partner's suit and with the other suits well stopped, South bid the slam.
Deal Us in: Double, rebid or pass?
July 21, 2010
South bid one diamond, and West made a weak jump overcall of two hearts. What should South bid when North and East have passed?

How deconditioned readers can make exercise gains
July 14, 2010
It was a pleasure to visit my former homes in Michigan and New York City last month and spend time with friends of long duration, some of whom I had not seen for many years. But alas, I found that a couple of them were just plain out of shape. Souls that formerly radiated energy had lost their vibrancy.
Deal Us In: First to set contract
July 14, 2010
Every declarer was in the four-heart contract, and they all made this contract. See if you can be the first West defender to set the contract. Declarer won the ace of diamonds, and your partner played the six of diamonds. At trick two, declarer led a heart, which you won with your ace, and your partner played the six hearts. It is your play.
