St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church held its annual May crowning ceremony, in which a statue of Mary is crowned, on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9.

Ten area students received scholarships during the May 9 services at the Longboat Island Chapel. Congregation members Harry and Anne Ferris started the scholarship fund in 1992. The recipients are selected by a chapel committee, which reviews the applications and interviews the students.

Members of Temple Beth Israel held their annual end-of-season barbecue April 25, at the Bay Isles Beach Club. Families and friends of members were invited as guests. Grilling hot dogs, chicken and burgers were Earl Gordon, Bob Vigder, Roger Goldstein and David Aura. After enjoying the feast, most stayed to watch the sunset.

An Italian spaghetti dinner is a spring tradition at the Longboat Island Chapel. As usual, Dr. Peter Mattina was in charge of the sauce, made from his favorite recipe, and his wife, Janice, supervised the salad-making. Bobbie Banan was in charge of overall arrangements, and a crew of volunteers served the dinner. About 60 church members and guests attended the April 21 event.

David "Scotty" Dawson, of the U.S. Central Command, was the guest speaker April 20, at the Sandpipers men's group of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church. A veteran Marine, Dawson joined the Central Command as a mobilized reservist in 2004. The CENTCOM area of responsibility covers 20 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Syria.

The Monkey Room at The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort was the setting for All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church’s farewell party of the season April 19. The party was an opportunity for church members to share their summer plans. There was no formal program, but a lot of informal conversation took place.

Golfer sees swinging success

Mote Marine Laboratory recently received a $99,615 grand for its dolphin and whale rehabilitation efforts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
