William Battle Wall Jr., 89, of Pinehurst, N.C., and formerly of Longboat Key, died Nov. 8.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Wall served aboard the USS Lyon during World War II, participating in the European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic and Pacific campaigns. Over the years, he enjoyed attending reunions with crewmates and officers.
Following his return from war, Mr. Wall re-engaged with his family’s farm in Pee Dee, N.C., where he began a career in lumber and timber. Upon retiring, he and his wife, Bettye, split their time between Longboat Key and Hendersonville, N.C., before locating in 2005 to Pinehurst.
Mr. Wall loved back-road excursions in his pickup truck and conversations with his relatives and friends. Some of his fondest times were spent enlightening his sons and grandsons on those drives with his past experiences.
Mr. Wall was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes; brother, Robert; and sisters, Lucy Martin Fetridge and Marjorie Jean Liles.
He is survived by his wife, Bettye; sister, Bettie Davidson; sons William III and Arthur; five stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Forestville United Methodist Church, c/o Debra Moss, at 133 Forest Road, Lilesville, N.C., 28091.
