David Lund, 80, of Longboat Key, died Nov. 29.
Mr. Lund served in the U.S. Navy for more than 26 years and retired as a decorated captain. One of his greatest achievements in his military career was his deadstick landing on the USS Leyte, when his disabled plane barrel rolled immediately following takeoff. His quick thinking saved his plane and crew.
Mr. Lund had a long and successful career in the incentive-and-travel industry, primarily in the Minneapolis area. He started at the Gold Bond Stamp Company in the early 1960s where, as general manager, he played an integral role in starting the Performance Incentive Company, predecessor to Carlson Marketing Group. He subsequently became a partner with World Travel and Incentives Inc., vice president at Northwestern Meetings and Incentives, and regional marketing director at Networld Inc.
Upon retiring in 1992 to Longboat Key, Mr. Lund created Results International Inc. He also served on the association board of County Club Shores, for which he was known affectionately as “the block captain,” and was an active member of St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, where he chaired the church stewardship committee for many years. He also loved boating and traveling.
Mr. Lund is survived by his wife, Sharon; sister, Wyllis Walters; son, Christopher; daughters, Carla Dinndorf and Leah Lietzke; stepchildren Stephanie Brennan Gorman and Keith Brennan; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 6, at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, 40 N. Adams Drive, Sarasota. A military internment service will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to the Salvation Army or the St. Armands Key Lutheran Church Foundation.
