Robert Edwin Blumenthal of Longboat Key, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa. died Dec. 5. He was 77.
Mr. Blumenthal was an accomplished business executive. He died in Sarasota due to complications related to MDS cancer, he was surrounded by his "girls."
Mr. Blumenthal was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Logan, Pa. He attended Olney High School and studied at Temple University. He joined his family business, the Penn Emblem Company, located in Philadelphia. His father, Frank Blumenthal founded the company in 1940. Mr. Blumenthal was chairman and President of the corporation for 60 years.
Mr. Blumenthal was a renaissance man who had a passion for his family and friends. He was an accomplished watercolor painter, enjoyed jazz music and cheering for his beloved Phillies. He was adored, admired and loved by family, friends and business associates. Robert was devoted to his Penn Emblem family.
He was active in several organizations including Young Presidents Organization, PPO, industry trade associations and numerous charities including The Federation of Jewish Agencies, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Wellness Center and The Van Wezel.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ima Blumenthal of Longboat Key and Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; his sisters Shirley Carroll, and Joanne Ameci; three daughters, Randi Joseph of Penn Valley, Pa., Ellen Churchill of Malvern, Pa., Tina Small of Bethesda, Md.; and his eight grandchildren.
Services will be held in Philadelphia, Pa. A private graveside service was held with his immediate family. Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
