Norma Vlahides, 75, of Longboat Key, died Nov. 23.
Born April 2, 1937, in Perth Amboy, N.J., she was raised in Edison, N.J. Mrs. Vlahides lived for 30 years in Brick, N.J., where she raised four children with her husband, Leo Coakley, who died in 1983.
Mrs. Vlahides lived in Upper Montclair, N.J., with her husband of 25 years, Anthony Vlahides, before moving to Longboat Key.
Mrs. Vlahides is remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, nurse and teacher who brightened the lives of everyone she met.
Mrs. Vlahides is survived by her husband, Anthony; six children; and 18 grandchildren.
A service took place Wednesday, Nov. 28. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, coalitionforpf.org.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
