Mary Virginia Elliot, of Sarasota and formerly of Petoskey, Mich., died Nov. 5. She was 97.
Mrs. Elliott was born Sept. 15, 1914.
She was a member of St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, for which she was a Stephen minister; the Longboat Key Club; the Sarasota Rotary Anns; The Bay View Association, in Petoskey, for which she played on the croquet team; and The Saginaw Club in Michigan.
Mrs. Elliot was preceded in death by her husband, A. Paul Elliott, and son, David Hoyt Elliott.
She is survived by her sister, Peggy Jo May; daughter, Gretchen L. Cochran; son, Thomas K.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Plymouth Harbor, Sarasota. Toale Brothers handled the arrangements.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
