Dr. Joseph Ryan Kelly, of Longboat Key and formerly of St. Paul, Minn., died Oct. 11. He was 81 years old.
Born Jan. 12, 1931, in Rutland, Vt., Dr. Kelly graduated in 1956 from the University of Vermont. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and a fellowship in allergy and immunology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Dr. Kelly also served in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Ord in California.
Dr. Kelly practiced medicine for 32 years in St. Paul, where he served on the board of the American Lung Association in Ramsey County. He was affiliated with the allergy section of the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Kelly is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; children Sarah Kelly, of Mystic, Conn., Ryan Kelly, of Red Wing, Minn., and Katy Kelly-Noun, of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota, Fla., 34236, where Dr. Kelly was a greenhouse volunteer.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
