Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian, began construction work on its planned 17,400-square-foot building at the 6400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Church officials had been waiting for a building permit from the Longboat Key Planning Zoning & Building Department before construction could begin.
The $2.98 million permit was issued Tuesday, June 29.
According to building committee member John Pol, contractors currently are excavating the site and laying out the footers for the building. Construction is expected to last about one year.
