Mary Ann Ruff, of Longboat Key and formerly of Columbus, Ind., died June 22. She was 81.
Mrs. Ruff grew up in Springfield, Ill., and attended the University of Illinois, where she graduated in 1952 with a degree in education. One of her outstanding accomplishments was leading her Chi Omega sorority to victory in the highly prestigious University Vocal Competition.
She was married to Robert T. Ruff in 1952. She taught kindergarten and third grade for several years following graduation and became a full-time homemaker in Columbus for almost 30 years. After retiring to Longboat Key, she became active in the University of Illinois Alumni Club, serving as president for 10 years. She was also involved with Alums and Sequel, the Sarasota Symphony and the Sarasota Opera Guild. Music always had a strong influence on her life.
Mrs. Ruff is survived by her husband, Robert T. Ruff; two daughters, Katheryn Ruff and Elizabeth Rutledge; and four grandchildren.
A memorial celebration will be held July 2, at the Longboat Key Club and Resort for family and friends. Mrs. Ruff will be buried at a private graveside ceremony in Springfield, Ill.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
