Ethel “Terry” Teal Crutchfield
Ethel “Terry” Teal Crutchfield, 87, of Longboat Key, died Sunday, June 14.

Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Baltimore, she grew up in Richmond, Va. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in the class of 1938 and the College of William and Mary, where she was a thespian and captain of the women’s fencing team, in 1942.

During World War II, Mrs. Crutchfield served as one of Virginia’s first woman radio announcers and also earned her pilot’s license so that she could fly support planes for the military. After the war, she earned a master’s certificate in occupational therapy from Columbia University, in New York City, and subsequently worked with World War II veterans in Richmond.

In 1949, she married Jack Crutchfield, a chemical engineer who later became marketing director for Esso, which later became Exxon, Middle Eastern, African and European divisions.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the Crutchfields lived in Brazil, Egypt, Libya and Switzerland. In 1970, they became residents of Longboat Key. They divided their time between Longboat Key and Richmond and continued to travel the world.

Mrs. Crutchfield was preceded in death by her husband, Jack. She is survived by her daughters, Mary, Margo and Jean; son, John; and four grandchildren.

The burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, June 22, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Richmond. A noon memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace Street, Richmond, will follow. A reception will take place after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
