School is out for summer. But for some Temple Beth Israel members, that means it’s time for schul. “Schul” is the Yiddish word for “synagogue,” and it’s where temple members are headed this summer, as the temple continues its Summer Schul 2009 program, featuring educational and social programs throughout the season.

On Monday, May 11, temple members toured the offices of Operation Graduation, in Newtown, a program for at-risk students from low-income areas that temple members helped to found.
It was movie night Monday, May 18, at the temple, as members gathered for a screening of the 1982 German film, “The White Rose,” which focuses on a group of Christian students who resisted Nazis.

Temple members will hold the series’ first Learn and Lunch program, “Smell the Coffee,” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Latitude 23.5, 8165 27th St. E., Sarasota. The group will learn about the history of coffee and tea, including the Indonesian brew, Kopi Luwak, which, at $50 a cup, is the most expensive coffee in the world.

After the program, the group will have lunch at Sierra Station, 400 N. Lemon Ave., Sarasota.

The next Learn and Lunch program hasn’t been scheduled yet, but it should quench members’ thirst for knowledge: The program will feature a tour of the Manatee County Water Treatment Plant.
