John Paul Mellon, of Bradenton, died April 6.
Mr. Mellon served as president of Western State College, Gunnison, Colo., before retiring in 1987 to Florida.
During his retirement years he taught literature at the Longboat Key Education Center and the Lifelong Learning Academy in Sarasota. He spoke on a variety of subjects, at the Manatee County Public Library throughout his retirement.
Mr. Mellon is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce; son, David; and, daughter, Penny.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests, for those who wish, to turn to a loved one and tell them so. No services are scheduled. Kicliter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
