Jean Foster, 85, of Cortez and formerly of Longboat Key, died March 11.
Born in Chicago, Mrs. Foster graduated from the University of Minnesota. A gentle and compassionate woman, she worked as a geriatric social worker at the Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minn., where she focused on helping the elderly achieve a high quality of life.
An animal-lover, Mrs. Foster assisted several animal-rescue organizations and welcomed many adopted pets into her home.
Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her daughter, Jean.
She is survived by her husband, Gramer; daughter, Carol; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 19, at St. Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church, in Bradenton. Donations may be made to Share-A-Pet, Wildlife Club Programs or the Humane Society.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
