George Richard ‘Dick’ Donahue Jr.
George Richard “Dick” Donahue Jr. died Dec. 26. He was 78.
Born July 27, 1933, in Lafayette, Ind., Mr. Donahue was the son of Dr. George Richard and Mary Cecile Watson Donahue. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and the University of Notre Dame. After serving in the Air Force, he continued his education at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago where he met and married Chicagoan Sheila Marie Callan.
They returned to Lafayette and resided there for more than 30 years, raising two children. After spending the winters on Longboat Key for many years, he retired, and they moved there in 1990. His wife, Sheila, preceded him in death in 1999. In 2005, he moved back to Indiana.
Mr. Donahue is survived by his second wife, Sandra Allende; sister, Sheila Donahue Higgins; daughter, Megan Donahue; son, Dennis Donahue; and one grandson.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 31. Interment will be held at a later date on Longboat Key.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
