+ Longboat Key churches step up to help Haiti
Got an extra pillowcase? Don’t sleep on it. St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church members have a project, initiated by Janet Kowal, in which they make dresses for Haitian girls out of pillowcases. Pillowcases and simple sewing directions are available at the church office. But the project is just one way Longboaters are helping earthquake victims in Haiti.
Key churches (All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian, Temple Beth Israel, St. Armands Key Lutheran Church and St. Mary's) have taken initial monetary collections, which are ongoing. At the Longboat Island Chapel, the Executive Committee approved $5,000 to support relief efforts through Doctors Without Borders. On Jan. 17, the congregation was asked to match the donation. They did that — and more. The congregation donated $6,999 for a total of $11,999.
