Mary-Elizabeth “Betty” McCoun Monroe, 85, of Plymouth Harbor, died Jan. 13.
Born Sept. 21, 1927, in New York, during her life she lived in New Jersey; New York City; Chicago; San Mateo, Calif.; Wilmette and Winnetka, Ill.; New Canaan, Conn., for 30 years; Longboat Key; and Plymouth Harbor since 2001.
Mrs. Monroe was a longtime member of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Sarasota and Bird Key Yacht Club. She enjoyed bridge, dancing, reading and travel.
Mrs. Monroe drove for Meals on Wheels for several years and was active in church, hospital and senior activities.
Mrs. Monroe is survived by her husband of 64 years, Andrew “Perry” Monroe; sons Bill Monroe, of Sarasota, and Steve Monroe, of New Canaan; daughter, Meg Zellinger, of Bowdoinham, Maine; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, 563 Bay Isles Road, with a reception following in the parish hall.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
