The three-acre Gulf-front Ohana estate on Longboat Key will be listed today for $22 million.
The estate at 6633 Gulf of Mexico Drive has been under construction for at least three years, according to listing agent Deborah Beacham, of Michael Saunders & Co.’s Longboat Key South office. The $22 million listing price is a record for the Sarasota area.
“It is a record for Sarasota but if you compare this quality of land and quality of structures to places like Palm Beach and Naples, it would probably go for $40 or $50 million there,” Beacham said.
The property consists of three pavilions and a separate beachfront guest house. Sarasota architect Guy Peterson designed the estate. Michael K. Walker & Associates was the builder.
The name “Ohana” is derived from a Hawaiian word that translates to “a place of family, laughter and sharing.”
The main residence was built as an addition to a smaller existing home.
According to Peterson’s website, guypeterson.com:
“Due to the challenging permitting requirements for coastal construction, the ability to have a new house on grade this close to the Gulf is not possible. The homeowners have chosen to redevelop the existing house into a new family ‘lodge’…. a place for entertaining, dining and relaxing. This is to be the principal congregate living spaces for the retreat.”
The three pavilions are set around a free-form swimming pool with a swim-up sun shelf and adjacent, palm-thatched beach pavilion. A motor court and tennis court are located on the east side of the property. The compound is shielded from Gulf of Mexico Drive by landscaping and a walled and gated entry.
The three pavilions have slightly less than 10,000 square feet of living space and include six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two-half baths.
“Ohana could not be more appropriately named,” said company founder and CEO Michael Saunders in a news release. “It is a magical property on an equally magical stretch of beach that was designed as a secluded seaside gathering spot for a very private family and their friends. Having grown up nearby, I can vouch for the fact that many of my most lasting memories and lifelong friendships were forged along the same magnificent stretch of beach.”
