A recent find on the beach across the street from Bayport Beach and Tennis Club left Diane Lewandowski feeling shell shocked.
During a walk on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Lewandowski, who is visiting from Bristol, Ind., found a rare Junonia shell. Typically, the Scaphella junonia, the snail species that inhabits the shell, lives in water between 25 and 200 meters deep, meaning that the shells usually only wash ashore after hurricanes.
The cream-color shells are covered by brown spots. Lewandowski's shell measured in at just over 4 inches.
