On Friday, Sept. 4, Temple Beth Israel member Mimi Edlin lit the Sabbath candles at the temple’s Shabbat service. Edlin lit the candles in honor of her mother, Rae Steinberg, whose 40th anniversary of her death coincided with the Shabbat service.
Growing up in Norwalk, Conn., Edlin recounts a Friday night tradition in her household. Edlin, her four siblings and her parents would gather around the Sabbath candles. Then, her mother would bless the candles and each family member in turn.
“I feel like I’m doing this tonight in her memory,” Edlin said.
