Rare-manuscript collector and expert and Longboat Key resident Larry Schoenberg just turned 80. He celebrated with three parties, organized by his wife, Barbara Brizdle. The first was at Aquavit in New York City, the second was on his actual birthday, July 4, at the Sarasota Yacht Club, and the third was a luncheon July 5. There were about 30 guests at the SYC party including Will Noel, director of the special collections center at the University of Pennsylvania Library and the founding director of the newly created Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies and his wife, Lynn Ransom.

Underground utilities ordinances surge ahead
The Longboat Key Town Commission voted on first reading to forward two ordinances related to undergrounding utilities.

The Women’s Guild of St. Mary Star of the Sea reigned in the fall season and celebrated the return of its seasonal residents Oct. 21, in the church’s activity center. The ladies who attended the Welcome Luncheon snacked on vegetable lasagna, rolls and salad, while talking with friends they haven’t seen since the spring.
Commission declines to endorse Mote vision
The Sarasota City Commission narrowly voted against endorsing Mote Marine Laboratory’s vision for expansion, which includes a new aquarium on city-owned bayfront land.
