On Saturday, June 9, Maria Sharapova won the 2012 French Open in her defeat of Sara Errani; her win was a career Grand Slam. As of Monday, Sharapova became the No. 1 female player in the world, which is an impressive feat considering a career-threatening shoulder surgery she suffered in 2008, which took her out of the top 100 ranking and out of the game for 10 months. The Russian-born player’s parents live on Longboat Key.
