+ After 30 years, teacher and student get a new deal
When part-time Lido Key resident Dr. Arthur Liebman welcomed recently the students attending his course on New Deal Drama, part of the Academy of Lifelong Learning at the University of South Florida, he took a second look at the man in the first row.
Thinking to himself, “I know that man,” Liebman asked, “Do I know you?”
With a smile, the man answered, “Yes. I’m Howard Goldberg, and I was in your senior citizens’ learning class at Stoneybrook College on Long Island.”
“That was 30 years ago!” Liebman said.
“Yes, it was, and the course was on Sherlock Holmes. You look the same, but your hair is gray,” Goldberg told him.
Both have been snowbirds for six years and still reside on Long Island, N.Y.
Since meeting again, they have become friends and socialize with each other’s families.
They share many common interests, such as watching black-and-white films.
Liebman’s career includes teaching English and taking early retirement to pursue teaching interests, including film history. He has taught at New York University, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and New School for Social Research. He and his wife, Joyce, a concert pianist, have also lectured aboard cruise ships.
