Islander Club resident Derek Bok spoke about his most recent book, “The Politics for Happiness: What Government Can Learn from the Research on Wellbeing,” March 12 to his fellow condominium residents. It is the third book in a series by Bok, a former president of Harvard University.
Among the things studies have found that make people happy are friendships, community activities and human relationships. Common states of unhappiness, Bok said, include death of a spouse and divorce, medical issues, chronic pain and sleeplessness. According to Bok, chronic pain in the U.S. is often under treated because doctors hesitate to prescribe drugs because of regulations.
