+ Longboat Key churches step up to help Haiti
Got an extra pillowcase? Don’t sleep on it. St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church members have a project, initiated by Janet Kowal, in which they make dresses for Haitian girls out of pillowcases. Pillowcases and simple sewing directions are available at the church office. But the project is just one way Longboaters are helping earthquake victims in Haiti.
Key churches (All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian, Temple Beth Israel, St. Armands Key Lutheran Church and St. Mary's) have taken initial monetary collections, which are ongoing. At the Longboat Island Chapel, the Executive Committee approved $5,000 to support relief efforts through Doctors Without Borders. On Jan. 17, the congregation was asked to match the donation. They did that — and more. The congregation donated $6,999 for a total of $11,999.

The Romanach and Casella families compete in a cornhole tournament July 12, at Sun ‘n Sea Cottages. The families have been vacationing on Longboat Key for over 14 years and six years ago, decided to organize and play in a cornhole tournament during their stay.
Beach project wraps up
Approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand was placed on the north end of the Key from North Shore Road to Broadway.

Mote Marine Laboratory’s Holly West washes a baby sea turtle that was brought in after a coyote attacked its nest July 10. Sea turtles face a variety of predators while they’re nesting, but Mote strives to help them by caring for any wounds, administering antibiotics and releasing them off shore when they’re strong enough.
