+ Bike awareness needed

Dear Editor:

I just read the article by Robin Hartill about the women hit on Longboat Key recently. This was a horrible article stating unclear information about the victims and also information that should have been re-directed toward motorists, not the cyclists.

You should have a mirror on your bike? Really? The first accident happened when an elderly man, who shouldn’t have even been in his car in the first place, went through two lanes and hit a group of cyclists head on. The article states “possible” injuries. Again, really? How about broken femurs, pelvis, radius, ulna and facial fractures.

There was also another accident that happened an hour after the first accident. The second accident involved a woman coming out of a driveway, not looking to her left and plowing another cyclist into oncoming traffic, breaking her radius and ulna with multiple scrapes, bumps and bruises.

Why when writing this article are the cyclists at fault for this accident? Why are we not focusing on raising awareness to motorists? I hope we can make changes to bring more awareness on this matter.

In the Aug. 26 article about the Aug. 21 bicycling accident, we reported the facts from the police report and reported on the cyclists’ condition from information obtained as of press time. — Editor
