Larry Grossman has qualified to run for the District 4 Longboat Key Town Commission seat currently held by Mayor Jim Brown in the town’s March 2013 election.
Grossman retired from the planning department of Alexandria, Va.
Former commissioner Gene Jaleski has also qualified to run for Commissioner Phill Younger’s at-large seat.
Both Brown and Younger are seeking re-election.
The qualification deadline for candidates seeking commission seats is noon Monday, Nov. 19. Candidates must have all petitions certified and returned to the Town Clerk’s office no later than that date.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
