+ One commission race secured
At-large Commissioner Phillip Younger will run for his first two-year term in March, according to Town Clerk Trish Granger.

Younger, who is currently finishing former Commissioner Gene Jaleski’s term, asked for a commission candidate qualification packet last week and confirmed for The Longboat Observer he will run for a second term.

Younger may have to run against former Commissioner and Mayor Joan Webster, who hasn’t decided whether to run for her former District 4 seat or the at-large seat currently held by Younger.

Younger has already returned two forms to Town Hall that confirm who his treasurer will be and the bank account he will be using to collect donations.

Younger is now able to obtain his petition and needs to collect 10 signatures from Key residents before becoming a certified candidate by the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Office.

District 4 Commissioner Jim Brown has also picked up a packet and intends to run for a second term.
The intentions of the three candidates mean that Webster will run either against Younger or Brown.

Any other interested citizens can request a commission candidate qualification packet by calling Granger at 316-1999.

+ Educational forum planned
The West Florida Chapter of Community Associations Institute will hold an All-Day Educational Forum for community association managers at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at the Venice Community Forum. Classes will be held until 5:15 p.m.

The courses offered will meet Florida continuing education credit requirements for managers. This educational event is also open to board members and homeowners who want to get the most up-to-date information on a variety of topics affecting associations.

For more information on event costs and to register online, visit www.caiwestflorida.org.

+ Correction
The Longboat Key Police Department has not signed a three-year labor contract, as reported in the Aug. 12 Longboat Observer. The department and the town are still reviewing issues before agreeing to a contract.
