+ Commissioner plans final term
Town Clerk Trish Granger confirmed that District 3 Commissioner Peter O’Connor submitted election paperwork at Town Hall for another two-year term.
O’Connor’s third, and final, two-year term would begin March 2010 and end in March 2012 if he is re-elected.
O’Connor still must file paperwork with the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections office.
+ Beach funding resolution passes
The Longboat Key Town Commission approved a beach-funding resolution at its Monday, July 6 regular meeting that allows the town to continue to remain eligible for state grants.
A breakwater solution for north-end beach erosion is eligible for 22% cost sharing with the state if approved by the Florida Department of Transportation. And the $2.5 million groin project that will be built behind The Islander Club has already received approval for 22.79% cost sharing.
+ School’s out for the summer
Longboat Key town staff has canceled the July and August Zoning Board of Adjustment regular meeting and the July and August Planning and Zoning Board regular meetings for a lack of agenda items in the summer months.
The Town Commission will also not hold any regular meetings or regular workshops in July or August. The Town Commission’s next scheduled meeting is its Monday, Sept. 14 regular meeting.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
