Sheriff Tom Knight presented his first budget to the County Commission since his election in November.
The process was much less contentious than former Sheriff Bill Balkwill’s presentation last year.
“I really like this,” said Commissioner Shannon Staub. “This is the first time I’ve ever been able to see a true budget. It’s amazing.”
Knight offered a 2010 budget of $86 million, which is $2 million less than Balkwill’s 2009 budget. To achieve that reduction, Knight instituted a salary freeze for all positions.
“The outstanding men and women of the sheriff’s office understand the current difficult times we’re all experiencing,” Knight said.
Knight said he wants to avoid any furloughs or layoffs this year.
