The Longboat Key Town Commission agreed to give the Longbeach Village Association $3,000 to cull the number of peacocks in the Village this summer — and every summer thereafter — at its Thursday, May 21 regular workshop.
The Village is currently home to about 60 peacocks.
Commissioner Gene Jaleski urged the commission to consider reducing the number of peacocks to a dozen birds, which would cost the town more money initially but less money in future years.
But the consensus was to give $3,000 a year, and the association can always come back to the town if the peacock reduction is not sufficient.
