The Longboat Key Town Commission agreed to move forward with the Bayfront Park concept plan at its Thursday, May 21 regular workshop. The plan does not include a baseball field.
The decision means the commission will allow town staff and Town Attorney David Persson to move forward with changes to the town's zoning code and Comprehensive Plan.
Because the new park plan calls for the deletion of the baseball field, the town must delete the requirement for a publicly supplied baseball/softball field or amend its Comprehensive Plan to suggest that the field is not required.
Persson said, in total, the changes that need to be made at the town and state level could take at least a year or more to accomplish.
Financing for the concept is unknown and is at least two years away from discussion, according to Town Manager Bruce St. Denis.
The Sarasota County Commission will discuss the park concept at a June 9 meeting.
